SCRIPT EDITING
Being a part of a writing team naturally involves analysing and helping to improve a script, so using those skills as a script editor was an obvious and enjoyable progression for me.
I have worked alongside talented writers, supported by BBC Comedy, BBC Writersroom and the BFI backed Nerve Centre, as well as independently with individuals. I also have acted as a script reader for BBC Comedy for their comedy bursaries, BBC Writersroom development schemes including Open Call, BBC World Service for the International Playwriting Radio Competition, the Red Planet Prize and as a consultant for creative funds across the UK.
Such work involves recognising and promoting new talent and offering script notes to writers who may be receiving their first professional critiques.

As a script editor my approach is to help the writer identify and realise their vision to the best of their ability. This is a supportive, almost therapeutic process, full of exploration and consideration, while also offering advice on such fundamentals as structure, pacing and style.

I like to give thorough written notes and back these up with conversations so the writer can feel clear and confident about how they wish to work on their project.

Support can begin at concept and treatment level, story lining or providing appropriate notes at any draft number of a project. I also like to maintain a relationship with a writer, when desired, so as to offer casual encouragement as they continue with their careers.
While TV Comedy is a speciality, I have experience across all mediums and many a genre, and believe the fundamental principles of story, character and communication are relevant to all forms of narrative writing.

If you’d like to hire me to give you some notes on your script then do get in touch. We can discuss the approach which would be best for you and your project, and because I recognise it can be a financial commitment for new writers, my rates work on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis.
